Dock Street School
The Dock Street School For STEAM Studies is a public school located at Dock Street between Front and Water Streets, in the neighborhood of DUMBO, Brooklyn. The school was built and opened in 2016. Previously, the site was Saint Ann's Warehouse, before they moved to a new location across from the street. On top of the school are condos, that was built by Two Trees Management.
Alex has been in the school from fall 2019 to February 21, 2022, when left for I.S. 96 Seth Low.
History
The Dock Street School was previously known as Satellite West Middle School, and was based the PS 307 school. District 13, the district the school was based at, proposed a move to DUMBO, after a rezoning process that included kindergarden students from DUMBO, which caused debates over diversity and intergration. Some local parents criticized the move when it was announced in October 2015, saying they were promised a new school instead of the relocation of an existing one, while several parents attended Thursday’s meeting to show their support for the relocation of the school. The new school location was to be at 19 Dock Street. The school at the time, which had only 86 students, had faced shrinking enrollment and was recently labeled "persistently dangerous" by the state, though some said that the designation was not fair. M.S. 313 shared a school with PS 307, and it was crucial that they moved out as part of the rezoning process, which was one of the target schools.
In 2016, the Two Trees condo building was opened, and the Satellite West Middle School moved to that location, changing its name to the Dock Street School. This allowed the increased enrollment in PS 307.
In 2020, due to the pandemic, all schools, including the Dock Street School, were converted to online learning. In the 2020-21 school year, some students had the option to go back to the school in-person, and finally during the 2021-22 school year, every student went back in-person.

Lunch
During lunch, the sixth graders go first, then the seventh graders, and the eighth graders go last. Before 2021, the lunch/recess was seperated by gender. For example, the boys would go in the gym for recess while the girls would go in the cafeteria, and would rotate every month. In the 2021-22 school year however, the system was changed up. Now the system is by class, with the even-numbered classes being together while the odd-numbered classes were together. During Tuesdays and Thursdays, due to the 6th graders having recess/conflicting schedules, all of the 8th graders will usually have to eat lunch in the cafeteria, and sometimes then go in the gym.
Visual arts
In visual arts, students can pick either from fine arts, music, dance, vocal, and drama. 6th Grade students explore all of the arts for a year within six weeks including vocal, instrumental, dance, drama and fine arts, and after six weeks each classes rotate visual art majors. The school requires every student in 7th and 8th Grades to choose a major focused around visual arts, which are vocal, instrumental, dance, drama or fine arts.
Incidents
- An incident involving a food fight in a cafeteria resulted in all of the 8th graders recieving lunch detention.
- A group of kids was laughing at and making fun of John, so as a result, he threw an orange at the kid, and had his brother called and was escorted out of the building by the security and the counselor.
- A phone ban was enacted because people were making TikTok videos in the bathroom. However, the kids still used their phones.
Uniforms
There is a uniform policy, and six graders wear yellow, seventh graders blue, and eighth graders white. Appropiate pants and skirts must be worn. On dress down days however, anyone can wear anything.
